- The Management

Welcome to the UVA Pilot Training Primer.

Our goal is to get you flying, because that is the fun part!

Unlike many other VA's, at UVA we also strive to advance your aviation knowledge and skill set. This Primer is intended as a fast once over of the highlights, to not only get you out flying and looking more like a pro, but also to solidify concepts that may be familiar to you already.

For the New Pilots

If you are a new pilot at UVA, you should know that we don't care what your past experience in aviation is, we are happy to teach you starting from square one. You have to learn to walk, before you can run -- as your career advances at UVA so will your flight skills and knowledge. This Primer will give you an idea of where you should be headed.

To fly for UVA, you do not need anything more than Flight Simulator, an internet connection, default/freeware aircraft and the freeware tools that we point out in this Primer. Complex payware aircraft and other add-ons will obviously enhance your experience, and many pilots will go this route, but they are not required. Both streams are touched on here.

Our goal is to get you up in the air, and online (if you wish), as quickly as possible. A
ll we ask from you, is an interest to learn. This is where you start.

For the More Experienced Pilots

The Pros will find this Primer valuable as well, as a quick "all-in-one" review, and will probably still learn a few new things that will help improve their flying.

What is Covered?

A broad range of topics are covered here, to get you up to speed on planning and flying a flight quickly. We also discuss interaction with ATC in the VATSIM environment, and the software that you need to get online with VATSIM -- but the procedures outlined here apply whether you are flying online, or if you are still flying offline.

Some topics may seem quite basic, and others may seem rather complex and mysterious at this point. Don't let that scare you, we have sprinkled in a little bit of spice here to make things interesting for the more seasoned pilots. In any case, it will all become second nature to you in time.

In this Primer we touch on many, if not most, of the important flight aspects and UVA SOPs (Standard Operating Procedure). However,  this primer is not all encompassing. As you prepare for Checkrides and Category advancement, you will also access a rich variety of additional training materials available to you at UVA, together with a Training Staff to help guide you!
